The town centre has gained a large number of apartments over the past two decades. Apartment kitchens are compact and frequently open onto the living space, which changes the brief: the kitchen is on display all the time, so handleless fronts and integrated appliances earn their cost in a way they might not in a closed-off room. Structural change is usually off the table, so the money goes into finish rather than layout.

In estate housing the calculation is different again. If the layout works and you are keeping it, the money is best spent on the two things you touch every day — the worktop and the drawer runners — rather than on a style change that adds cost without adding function.
