Post-war planned housing. Crawley and the larger developments around it were built to consistent specifications, which makes kitchen replacement unusually predictable. Standard unit sizes fit, services are where the drawings say, and fitting time is at the low end.
Historic centres. Chichester and the older parts of Arundel, Midhurst and Horsham bring conservation-area considerations and period construction. Internal kitchen work is rarely restricted, but extraction routes and anything visible externally need checking early.
Coastal towns. Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor have a large stock of Victorian and Edwardian houses and flat conversions, where kitchens are often compact and the gains come from layout and storage rather than square metres.
Rural and semi-rural. Properties outside the towns tend towards larger kitchens that double as living space — the projects where islands, second sinks and separate utilities are worth pricing.
Because so much of the county’s housing is standard-specification and structurally straightforward, a higher share of the budget reaches the kitchen itself rather than being absorbed by building work. That makes West Sussex one of the areas where the published ranges are most likely to be what you actually pay.
The decisions that move the figure are therefore the ordinary ones: whether the layout stays put, which worktop material you choose, and how far up the appliance range you go. Of the three, appliances are the easiest to revisit later — a kitchen fitted with mid-range appliances can be upgraded in five years, whereas the worktop and the carcasses are effectively permanent decisions.
In the historic centres, the one item worth resolving before ordering is extraction. Where an external vent is restricted, the hob position may be constrained, and that is a layout question rather than a finishing one.
